Alnwick is a market town in Northumberland, England, of which it is the traditional county town. The population at the 2011 Census was 8,116.
Dating from about AD 600, Alnwick thrived as an agricultural centre. Alnwick Castle was the home of the most powerful medieval northern baronial family, the Earls of Northumberland. It was a staging post on the Great North Road between Edinburgh and London, and latterly has become a dormitory town for nearby Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The town centre has changed relatively little, but the town has seen some growth, with several housing estates covering what had been pasture, and new factory and trading estate developments along the roads to the south.

History
The history of Alnwick as a town can be traced all the way back to the 7th century. Located on the banks of the river Aln, the town is home to a stunning castle which is the ancestral home of the powerful Percy family. Another medieval highlight here in Alnwick is Bondgate Tower, a 15th century tower built by the Earl of Northumberland and still used by modern traffic today. Bondgate is the dividing line between the areas known as Bondgate Within (inside the walls) and Bondgate Without (outside the walls).

Alnwick is often referred to as the ‘Windsor of the North and in 2016 Alnwick was voted by Countrylife Magazine as the best place to live in Britain. If you are a bookworm then look no further than the legendary Barters Books, a unique secondhand bookstore, with open fires, armchairs, an excellent cafe and even model trains! Today Alnwick is a thriving market town with bags of charm, successful independent businesses and some of the friendliest people you could hope to meet!
